Clinical Scientist Training: Expressions of Interest for the 2027 Cohort

Overview

Each year, Public Services Delivery Scotland Healthcare Science Education invites services to submit expressions of interest for supernumerary pre-registration Clinical Scientist training posts.

About the Training Posts

These supernumerary posts enable science graduates to enter the NHS and complete a three-year specialty training programme, which may include an MSc. The endpoint of training is statutory registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

The title Clinical Scientist is not specific to one professional group. Most graduate-level Healthcare Science roles have a Clinical Scientist training pathway, alongside any other routes that may be available within individual specialties.

Annual Intake

Public Services Delivery Scotland Healthcare Science Education can generally support an annual intake of approximately 20 Clinical Scientist trainees across the range of specialties in Scotland.

Expressions of Interest for 2027

Expressions of interest for the 2027 cohort will open on 20 July 2026 and close on 28 August 2026. Submissions should include information on workforce demand.

A template for evidence submission is available here. If you have any queries, please contact the NES Healthcare Science core team at HCS@nes.scot.nhs.uk.
